Mei Powers

I believe everyone has a story to share and that our stories shape our purpose. This is a bit of my story.

My Story

As the daughter of Cambodian refugees, Mei brings a lived understanding of the cultural, linguistic, and structural barriers that shape access and opportunity. This perspective has fueled her career in the nonprofit sector, where she has dedicated over 15 years to building inclusive spaces, strengthening community connections, and driving resources to mission-driven organizations serving those often hardest to reach.

Before launching Fractional Powers, Mei served as Chief Development and Communications Officer at Martha’s Table, where she led a cross-functional team of 11 and raised approximately 10.5 million annually in private revenue. She also increased corporate giving by 37%, streamlined systems across departments, cultivated an enterprise mindset among program leaders, shifted teams toward outcome-based KPIs, and elevated the organization’s visibility through earned media.

At Miriam’s Kitchen, Mei helped triple the organization’s budget from $3.3M to $10.1M by designing high-impact campaigns and securing media attention that doubled the donor base and expanded community engagement. As part of the Executive Team, she played a central role in shaping the organization’s COVID-19 response, embedding equity into strategic planning, strengthening organizational culture, and creating a crisis communications framework.

She has been a guest lecturer at Georgetown University and spoken on panels including at the Bridge to Integrated Marketing & Fundraising Conference. She was recognized in 2021 as the C-Suite Spotlight Honoree by the Washington Business Journal.

What makes Mei unique is her love of data and stories. She digs into numbers to uncover insights that reveal opportunity, while also helping people share their stories with dignity and authenticity. By bringing mission and metrics to life, Mei moves hearts and minds to invest in the communities they love.

Outside of work, Mei co-authored a book with her daughter Kaili entitled “It’s Not That Spicy,” which introduces children to spicy, Asian foods
and encourages them to be brave and try new things.
